Bicycling in the region is growing rapidly in popularity, and the Central Shenandoah Valley is nationally recognized as a bicycling touring destination.


This website encourages bicycling in the Central Shenandoah Valley. It details on-and off-road cycling facilities in our neighborhoods, communities, and provides a comprehensive list of scenic loop rides in each of our localities. Browse the maps for scenic routes in the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, and Rockingham; the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton, and Waynesboro; and the eleven towns that lie between.

2017 Bike Virginia Tour - June 23-28, 2017

2017 marks 30 years of touring Virginia with amazing bike enthusiasts just like you! Bike Virginia has seen almost all of the state in our long history of exploring Virginia by rural back roads. We know you will find this area of the Shenandoah Valley beautiful and historical, and completely unique to Virginia.

We focus on great riding, relaxing, entertainment, exploration, fun, and just the right services to keep you happy and comfortable. Come for a day, three days (weekend or weekday), or the whole six day adventure!

Red Wing Roots Music Festival and Bike Rides - July 14-16, 2017

Set your calendars and buy your tickets! The Red Wing Roots Music Festival is approaching quickly. On July 14th, 15th & 16th join a whole bunch of your closest friends out at Natural Chimneys Park for a weekend of music, camping, bike riding, and other outdoor fun.

Red Wing Festival Bike Rides take place on Saturday of the festival weekend. Choose your ride:

  • Short Ride (10-15 miles)
  • Intermediate Ride (35 miles to base of Reddish Knob)
  • Intermediate / Advanced Road Ride (40 miles including climb to top of Reddish Knob)
  • Mountain Bike Ride (easy trails)

Harrisonburg Named One of America's Best Mountain Bike Towns!

National Geographic named Harrisonburg, Virginia one of America's 20 Best Mountain Bike Towns. Check out the article to see the rest of the towns that made the list.

"Bicycling in Virginia" Map Update

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is planning to update the "Bicycling in Virginia" map.

The map update will be released in conjunction with an online interactive map which allows more detail. The print version cannot show detail, but the online map will be zoomable and will directly link to websites with more information.

Suggestions (new trails or other information) for the new map can be submitted here.

VDOT is also looking for high quality, high resolution modern bicycling photos for the map. The following topic areas are needed:

  • Capital Trail;
  • Urban Cycling;
  • Bicycling with Kids / Families;
  • Photos from UCI 2015 World Championships; and
  • Heart of Appalachia Bicycle Route / Guest River Gorge.

Photos should be taken in Virginia. Send photos, or a link to download them, with a note documenting permission to John Bolecek. Any other comments regarding suggestions can be sent as well.
